Here’s how to make the most of these iPhone settings.

Do you struggle to read small text? The iPhone’s text customization features can make it easier to read.

  1. Open Settings on your iPhone.
  2. Tap Accessibility > Display & Text Size.

  4. Adjust the text slider for the ideal size.

Increase Contrast

Increase contrast to make screen elements easier to differentiate.

  1. Go to Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size.
  2. Toggle Increase Contrast to improve visibility.

Zoom In for Better Visibility

The Zoom feature lets you enlarge parts of your screen, which is ideal for seniors with low vision.

  1. Open Settings > Accessibility > Zoom.
  2. Toggle Zoom ON.
    1. Double-tap with three fingers to zoom in.
    2. Drag three fingers to move around the screen.

Use Magnifier to Read Small Text

Turn your iPhone into a magnifying glass with the Magnifier feature.

  1. Enable the Magnifier app by saying, “Siri, open Magnifier.” You can also tap on the app.
  2. Drag the slider to zoom in and out.

iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max users can assign the Action Button to open Magnifier for quick access.

The VoiceOver feature provides spoken descriptions of on-screen elements for the visually impaired.

  1. Go to Settings > Accessibility > VoiceOver and toggle it ON.
  2. Adjust the speed and tone of the voice to your liking.

You can also turn on the VoiceOver feature by saying, “Siri, Turn on VoiceOver.”

Hearing Accessibility Tips for Seniors

Pairing Made for iPhone Hearing Aids

Apple’s Made-for-iPhone hearing aids connect seamlessly with your device for improved audio quality.

  1. Check your hearing aid compatibility via Settings > Accessibility > Hearing Devices.
  2. Pair your hearing aid and adjust settings directly from your iPhone.

Live Listen Acts as Your Remote Microphone

Live Listen turns your iPhone into a remote microphone for clearer sound in noisy environments or when someone is far away.

  1. Pair your AirPods or hearing aids.
  2. Go to Settings > Accessibility > Hearing Devices or AirPods, and toggle Live Listen ON.
  3. Open the Control Center by swiping down from your screen’s top right corner.
  4. Press the ear icon and then Live Listen.

RTT allows text-based communication during phone calls, which is perfect for individuals with hearing impairments.

  1. Go to Settings > Accessibility > RTT/TTY.
  2. Toggle Software RTT/TTY ON. Start RTT calls by tapping the RTT button when you receive a call, dial a number, or directly from your contact list.
  3. Type your message and press return to send a text message during an RTT call. Siri or dictation can also help you enter the text. Look at the Phone app or the call screen to read a text message. Alternatively, you can use Speak Screen or VoiceOver to read the text aloud.

Note: RTT isn’t available when roaming abroad as it uses call minutes.

Turn On Subtitles for Video Content

Enable subtitles for videos to ensure you don’t miss important details.

  1. Go to Settings > Accessibility > Subtitles & Captioning.
  2. Toggle ON Closed Captions + SDH. Customize subtitle appearance under Style for better readability.

To watch videos with subtitles, look for the CC icon in the corner. Tap it and choose your preferred language.

Customize Headphone Audio

Adjust headphone audio settings for personalized sound. You can also consider apps like TruHearing or devices from Eargo for hearing support.
